Le but est de concevoir un prototype montrant l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 du proc\u00e9d\u00e9, avec l\u2019aide d\u2019un financement de la SATT Paris-Saclay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.polytechnique.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/contenu_detail\/public\/content\/actualites\/images\/2023-03\/DSC_1092.jpg?itok=tukzAkBF\" alt=\"Recycler le CO2 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la m\u00e9thanation par plasma\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>21 Mar. 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Innovation, Recherche, Plasmas, LPP<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La transition \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique est un enjeu majeur de la lutte contre le r\u00e9chauffement climatique. Le recyclage d\u2019une partie du dioxyde de carbone (CO2) \u00e9mis par les activit\u00e9s humaines constitue une des solutions avec le d\u00e9veloppement des \u00e9nergies renouvelables, l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique, la sobri\u00e9t\u00e9, ou encore le stockage du CO2. Cet enjeu \u00e9cologique a fourni une motivation \u00e0 Edmond Baratte pour s\u2019engager dans une th\u00e8se au Laboratoire de physique des plasmas (LPP*)&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;J\u2019avais envie d\u2019en apprendre plus sur le CO2 et les moyens de le recycler, non seulement sur les aspects scientifiques fondamentaux, mais qui puisse conduire ensuite \u00e0 un produit ayant une valeur ajout\u00e9e&nbsp;\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans la suite de ses travaux de th\u00e8se, la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration de transfert technologique (SATT) de Paris-Saclay vient de lui accorder un financement de 115&nbsp;000 euros sur 14 mois afin d\u2019am\u00e9liorer un prototype permettant la conversion d\u2019un m\u00e9lange de CO2 et de dihydrog\u00e8ne (H2) en m\u00e9thane (CH4). Cette derni\u00e8re mol\u00e9cule est celle du gaz naturel, tr\u00e8s utilis\u00e9 pour le chauffage par exemple. Ce processus de m\u00e9thanation \u2013 qui diff\u00e8re de la m\u00e9thanisation, qui forme \u00e9galement du m\u00e9thane \u00e0 partir de la d\u00e9composition de d\u00e9chets &#8211; diminue le recours aux ressources fossiles si le H2 est \u00e9galement produit avec une faible empreinte carbone, par \u00e9lectrolyse de l\u2019eau par exemple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Un d\u00e9p\u00f4t d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie cibl\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A l\u2019heure actuelle, la m\u00e9thanation est peu utilis\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle industrielle. Quelques d\u00e9monstrations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.connaissancedesenergies.org\/methanation-de-l-e-methane-produit-fos-sur-mer-depuis-debut-juillet-230215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es<\/a>. \u00ab&nbsp;La m\u00e9thode principale consiste \u00e0 chauffer et comprimer un m\u00e9lange CO2 et H2, mais cela n\u00e9cessite d\u2019apporter beaucoup d\u2019\u00e9nergie, souligne Edmond Baratte. L\u2019id\u00e9e de l\u2019approche par plasma consiste \u00e0 faire un d\u00e9p\u00f4t d\u2019\u00e9nergie cibl\u00e9 sur les mol\u00e9cules pour d\u00e9clencher la r\u00e9action, sans gaspiller trop d\u2019\u00e9nergie en chaleur.&nbsp;\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les plasmas repr\u00e9sentent un \u00e9tat de la mati\u00e8re dans lequel des \u00e9lectrons sont arrach\u00e9s des atomes auxquels ils sont d\u2019habitude associ\u00e9s. Lorsque la temp\u00e9rature du gaz reste basse, comme c\u2019est le cas ici, on parle de plasmas \u00ab&nbsp;froids&nbsp;\u00bb. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un des domaines o\u00f9 le LPP fait figure d\u2019expert, notamment Olivier Guaitella, directeur de th\u00e8se d\u2019Edmond Baratte, qui \u00e9tudie les plasmas de CO2 depuis plusieurs ann\u00e9es. Le plasma est cr\u00e9\u00e9 en appliquant un champ \u00e9lectrique qui acc\u00e9l\u00e8re les \u00e9lectrons. Ceux-ci se cognent de nombreuses fois aux mol\u00e9cules de CO2, lesquelles emmagasinent cette \u00e9nergie, notamment sous forme de vibration. Ce surplus rend le CO2 plus r\u00e9actif et donc plus facile \u00e0 dissocier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au cours de sa th\u00e8se, Edmond Baratte s\u2019est pench\u00e9 sur les m\u00e9canismes fondamentaux du recyclage conjoint du CO2 et du CH4 par plasma. \u00ab&nbsp;Ces plasmas sont int\u00e9ressants mais aussi difficiles \u00e0 analyser car plusieurs chemins de r\u00e9actions chimiques peuvent se produire, parfois en parall\u00e8le. Apr\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res exp\u00e9riences, nous esp\u00e9rions pouvoir comprendre directement ce qu\u2019il se passait dans le plasma, mais cela s\u2019est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 plus compliqu\u00e9&nbsp;!&nbsp;\u00bb explique le jeune chercheur. En collaboration avec l\u2019IST Lisbonne, il a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 et valid\u00e9 un mod\u00e8le num\u00e9rique qui permet de pr\u00e9dire les chemins de r\u00e9action, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire comment les mol\u00e9cules se dissocient et se r\u00e9assemblent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tester l&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle industrielle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans le projet \u00ab&nbsp;Cycles&nbsp;\u00bb financ\u00e9 par la SATT, il ne s\u2019agit plus de partir d\u2019un m\u00e9lange de CO2 et de CH4, mais d\u2019un m\u00e9lange de CO2 et H2. Cependant, la chimie reste proche et ses travaux de th\u00e8se serviront \u00e0 la compr\u00e9hension de ce nouveau cas. \u00ab&nbsp;Avec l\u2019envol\u00e9 des prix du gaz naturel depuis la guerre en Ukraine, il n\u2019est selon moi plus pertinent \u00e9conomiquement d\u2019utiliser le m\u00e9thane comme intrant&nbsp;\u00bb confie Edmond Baratte. L\u2019objectif sera de d\u00e9montrer l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 de la m\u00e9thanation par plasma \u00e0 d\u00e9charge radiofr\u00e9quence, avec des volumes de CO2 trait\u00e9 de l\u2019ordre du m3 par jour, compatibles avec l\u2019\u00e9chelle industrielle. Le but consiste \u00e9galement \u00e0 tester des conditions semblables \u00e0 celles de la sortie d\u2019une chemin\u00e9e d\u2019usine, o\u00f9 le m\u00e9lange de gaz n\u2019est jamais pur, mais contient aussi du diazote par exemple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un projet de pr\u00e9-maturation de l\u2019Institut polytechnique de Paris men\u00e9 en parall\u00e8le de sa th\u00e8se, Edmond Baratte a d\u00e9j\u00e0 pu poser les premi\u00e8res bases avec un prototype de r\u00e9acteur plasma. Parmi les d\u00e9fis qu\u2019il faudra encore surmonter, il s\u2019agira de trouver les meilleurs catalyseurs m\u00e9talliques possibles afin de diminuer l\u2019\u00e9nergie \u00e0 fournir pour d\u00e9clencher la m\u00e9thanation. Les travaux r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par une autre doctorante du LPP, Carolina Garcia Soto, sur les interactions entre plasmas et surfaces, seront alors tr\u00e8s utiles. \u00ab&nbsp;Je vais \u00e9galement tester l\u2019utilisation d\u2019une source innovante pour cr\u00e9er des plasmas avec de nouvelles propri\u00e9t\u00e9s. Il y a donc un int\u00e9r\u00eat purement scientifique au projet au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019application industrielle&nbsp;\u00bb ajoute le physicien qui pourra donc travailler sur ce sujet au moins un an de plus au LPP dont il appr\u00e9cie l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.
